A beer garden has closed in 2019 and a beer garden at a pub has gone the way of the car.
The Beer Garden at a Bar on the Square at Queen Street and Queen Street West is closing at the end of 2019 and will be replaced by a bar called The Beer Garden, which is expected to reopen in 2023.
BAR owner David Lenton said the building had been a popular destination for visitors and locals for decades, but it was the change in the industry that drew him to the idea.
“It’s a really great idea,” he said.
It’s been a fantastic opportunity to build a brewery in this part of Melbourne.
People are very interested in the craft beer industry, and the craft breweries have really taken off and are really growing.
We have a huge clientele in this area, and we are really excited to open up our new brewery.
Lenton said it was not a decision he made lightly.
He said it would be difficult to compete with the craft beers in the city, which was his goal, but said he hoped the change would make a difference to the area.
There is a lot of potential, but there is a lack of development and there is no real infrastructure for a brewery.
The Beer Gardens opened in 1972 and has been a favourite of locals since it opened.
In a statement on the Beer Garden Facebook page, it said the pub was planning to reopen the building at the start of the new financial year.
While it was hard to say exactly when the pub would reopen, Lenton was keen to reassure patrons that the building would be up and running within the next few months.
Beer Garden at Queen and Queen Streets West is the first of three beer gardens in Melbourne, and Lenton is hoping the new location will be the last.
