A man has been shot outside of the US Congress building with an AR-type rifle, according to police.
The shooting happened about 9:30 p.m.
Friday on the south side of the Capitol building, where members of Congress were meeting.
A witness said the man was shot and he was treated at a local hospital.
A Capitol police spokeswoman said the incident is under investigation.
The Capitol Police Department said a Capitol police officer shot the man outside the building after the suspect got out of a car.
The officer fired two rounds, the department said in a statement.
